“The war came and I had to run away.”  In 1985, at the age of 11, Salva Dut’s world was turned upside down when he had to flee school to save himself from becoming a Sudanese child soldier. Instead became one of the "lost boys" of Sudan, a refugee who covered the African continent on foot as he searched for his family and for a safe place to stay.

In this week’s Book Club we will read and experience Linda Sue Park’s amazing book, A Long Walk to Water, in which she weaves Salva’s true biography with the fictional story of young Nya, a girl whose life is forever changed by Salva’s life’s work, building water wells in Sudan.

Using a Sacred Talking Circle format to promote compassionate and interactive listening, we will discuss global issues such as water, refugees and war, as well as what we can do as part of Global Community to take care of each other.

We will also experience journaling, story-writing, role-playing and various art projects, as well as the joy of reading a good book together! (Students are not required to own their own copies of the book).
